Betty Amongi, the minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development, has called upon corporate companies to include women in decision-making structures of their companies, stating that Uganda stands at a pivotal moment in its development journey where the principles of equality, empowerment and environment stewardship are paramount to the country’s progress.
Amongi said this during the launch of Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL) 2024 annual Sustainability Report, which highlights the company’s steadfast commitment to sustainable business practices with a special focus on inclusion and diversity under the theme ‘Championing Inclusion and Diversity.’
She noted that as Uganda continues its journey towards sustainable development, the private sector should set the benchmark for responsible business practices and should focus more on empowering communities, particularly women, while advancing environmental sustainability.
“Government has made great progress in seeking gender equality and women’s rights at the work places, families and politics. In parliament, there is 34 per cent of women’s representation and 45 per cent of women in cabinet. I am happy that the corporate world is embracing gender inclusivity in decision-making and in the supply chain, which is creating jobs for most of our vulnerable communities,” Amongi said.
Andrew Kilonzo, the managing director of UBL, said the report aligns with the brewer’s sustainable initiatives across three key pillars of championing inclusion and diversity, promoting positive drinking and pioneering grain-to-glass sustainability.
“We embrace a diverse workforce that brings together individuals with varied backgrounds, experiences and perspectives, fostering innovation and creativity in problem-solving. For instance, over 60 per cent of our top leadership is composed of women. Even in technical teams, we have been able to attract women to run our production lines; we have line five which is 75 per cent female-run, and women make up over 30 per cent of our total staff population. This diversity drives innovation and strengthens our operations,” Kilonzo said.
