TotalEnergies takes over Bujagali Power Plant

NJERU, BUIKWE | Bujagali Energy Limited (BEL) has celebrated its twelve year of transformative impact on Uganda’s energy landscape.

Commissioned in 2012, the Bujagali Hydropower Project harnessed the mighty Nile, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s journey towards energy independence.

During a breakfast meeting at the plant in Njeru Municipality Buikwe District, the General Manager Alaister McDougall revealed that BEL has been pivotal in changing the electricity sector in Uganda.

“From its inception, BEL’s mission was clear: to provide reliable, renewable energy and bolster Uganda’s socio-economic development,” he said

The 250MW hydropower plant quickly became the backbone of Uganda’s electricity supply, reducing power outages and stabilizing the national grid.

This reliability spurred growth in industries, small businesses, and improved the quality of life for millions of Ugandans.

McDougall says beyond electricity generation, BEL has invested in local communities through corporate social responsibility initiatives in education, healthcare, and infrastructure uplifted the areas surrounding the dam.

“Schools were built, healthcare services expanded, and clean water projects implemented, embodying BEL’s commitment to corporate social responsibility,” he told the Nile Post

He said environmental stewardship has also been at the forefront of BEL’s operations.

The company employed sustainable practices to minimise ecological disruption and supported conservation efforts around the River Nile ecosystem.

As BEL marks twelve years, it stands as a testament to the power of public-private partnerships in fostering national development.

Its success story is not just about energy but also about empowering communities and safeguarding the environment, lighting up lives and the future of Uganda.

In his address to the staff and Contractors at BEL on Thursday morning Alaister McDougall revealed that Scatec one of the shareholding companies with 28 percent shares have sold their shares to TotalEnergies and very soon, they leaving BEL to go and venture into other businesses.

“The principal shareholders are SN Power BV belonging to Scatec, and Bujagali Power Holdings Corporation which belong to the Agakhan and Uganda government also has shares in BEL” he said

He added that Scatec have entered into agreement with Total Energies to take over their shares in Bujagali Energy Ltd.

“You have been seeing here some people from TotalEnergies, and probably you read in the news papers that the shares of Scatec were taken over by Total energies, it is true, and very soon, Scatec shall be leaving” McDougall assured the staff.
